Alumni Spotlight: Justina Proue, Class of 2009
From the classroom to Mayo Clinic, Justina lives with purpose
Justina Proue graduated from Liberty Classical Academy in 2009. Following graduation, she went on to the University of Minnesota College of Biological Sciences. “Having the experience of being taught science from a Christian worldview at Liberty really helped me to maintain my Christian faith when being taught science from a secular worldview at college.”
Today, Justina is a medical cardiac ICU nurse at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. “Liberty gave me the strength to continue to pursue my passions, and to think logically and critically. Both of these skills are very integral to my job,” says Justina. This year, Justina will further her career by starting a program to become a nurse anesthetist.
“I remember my very first visit to Liberty Classical Academy was in the spring before 8th grade. At my old school, I felt like just a number, merely an acquaintance of those around me. At Liberty, that changed. My classmates and teachers were people I could really share and grow with,” says Justina. “I told my mom that day that I wanted to be enrolled at Liberty, and never once regretted this decision. I remained at Liberty from 8th grade until I graduated high school, and these were five of the best years of my life.”
Flashback to the '00s
During her time at Liberty, Justina participated in several school plays. “I really never thought I would enjoy performing in school plays until I met Mrs. Struck.” Today, Mrs. Struck is Liberty’s Upper School English Department Head. Justina also was a member of the Liberty track team, which she remembers as being a close-knit family and one of her favorite experiences.
“At one point, I did consider leaving Liberty to do PSEO at the University of Minnesota. After much prayer and discussion, however, I realized that my experience at Liberty meant too much for me to give up. I am so glad that I decided to stay at Liberty. Because of this, I was able to continue forming these tight-knit bonds with my classmates - many of which I have been able to carry on into adulthood - as well as continue to prepare me to maintain my Christian world view in an ever-changing world,” says Justina. “I think those last two years allowed me to take everything I had learned at Liberty - making arguments for my faith, learning how to think logically and critically, and learning how to think uniquely and logically about topics - and truly hone these skills to prepare me for life and school after Liberty.”
