Varsity Track & Field Team Finishes Historic Season
Excellence doesn't stop in the classroom for our Liberty Lions.
Many of our upper school students also participate in our athletic programs, which continue to grow each year. Our athletics seek to glorify God through competition, sportsmanship, and our Christian witness to other schools and teams. In June, our 2024-2025 Varsity Track Team achieved this through a commitment to excellence in multiple ways.
Meet the Liberty Lions Varsity Track Team
This past season, our team included Filbert Amenumey (11), Colin Anderson (12), Sophia Anderson (12), Evan Berg (9), Anton Buck (9), Addy Dixon (11), Clarence Dixon (9), Eloise Dixon (7), Lily Dobrotka (11), Everett Gilbert (12), William Gilbert (10), Lucas Heu (10), Tom Kanowitz (11), Cade Mandell (12), Ben Montag (12), Bella Najarian (11), Zack Smith (9), Lauren Sjobeck (10), Will Smith (11), Levi Sutkowski (10), Hunter Tacheny (12), Eda Tolar (11), Will Welch (10), Isaac Whitlock (9), Ben Wurst (11), Jonah Wurst (10), and Nels Zenner (10).
Stand-Out Season Wins
The team had much to celebrate this season on their journey to State. The Eastern Minnesota Athletic Conference (EMAC) Championship held in the spring, resulted in some historic wins for Liberty Classical Academy, including:
- Winning the EMAC Conference Championship (Men's) for the first time in our program's history
- Senior Sophia Anderson gold-medaled in the 300mHm, making her the highest-scoring athlete at the meet - with 18 points (gold in hurdles, gold in triple jump, and silver in long jump).
- 1st place in the 4x400 for the first time in our program's history
- Meddling in every women's field event, 80% of which were gold
- Sweeping the podium in men's triple and ended up with over 70% of the available points in the men's jumps (Gold across all three jumps, silver in two out of three, and our lone bronze in triple)
"The thing I enjoy the most about coaching track is the ability to foster enjoyment of physical activity and to help athletes find improvement and confidence in their abilities. God has blessed us with athletes who have been able to find and pursue things they're incredibly passionate about, as well as a team that can form such a strong and supportive community and have so much fun together," says Coach Ross Pearson. "And as a coach, I'm personally proud of the numbers-oriented growth our team has undergone since I came on as head coach, growing by nearly 40% over three years."
Valuing Sportsmanship Over Awards
Not only did the team exemplify excellence in their sport, but also in how they prioritize what matters most. Colin Anderson, a recently graduated senior, is a great testament to that.
"Earlier in the season, Colin was competing against an EMAC rival from Math and Science Academy in the long jump. On the opponent's third jump of the meet, after setting marks that surpassed the state standard in his first two, he suffered an ACL tear, which put a devastating end to his senior season," explains Pearson. "What makes this event stand out is because of how Colin responded. He dropped everything he was doing to go help his rival, sprinting to go help him up and support him until EMS could come help. His actions showcase what our team truly stands for and strives to represent.”
