Grading
Objective: To ensure consistency in grading and to accurately measure and communicate each student’s academic progress.
GRADING POLICY FOR LOWER SCHOOL
KINDERGARTEN
Students are graded using +, S, or - in the various learning categories.
Students are given a single percentage grade in each major subject area.
Additionally, students are given a +, S, - in the various learning categories within each subject.
Generally speaking, letter grades are not given; however, the percentages below are representative of the basic letter categories, as shown.
Teachers are required to notify a parent if a student has failed a major test, quiz, or project. If letter grades are given, the following designations will be used:
100 – 97.5% – A+
97.4 – 92.5% – A
92.4 – 89.5% – A-
89.4 – 87.5% – B+
87.4 – 82.5% – B
82.4 – 79.5% – B-
79.4 – 77.5% – C+
77.4 – 72.5% – C
72.4 – 69.5% – C-
69.4% and Below – F
Incomplete – I
GRADES 1-5
GRADING POLICY FOR MIDDLE AND UPPER SCHOOL
Students are given letter grades of A, B, C and F. Anything below 69.5% (C-) is considered an F. No D’s are given. Teachers are required to notify a parent if a student has failed a major test, quiz or project.
As a rule, students are not allowed to retake tests. At the teacher’s discretion, however, there may be exceptions to this rule, but only on a class-wide basis, rather than an individual basis.
Quarter and Semester grades may be weighted to ensure that no more than 40% of any given course grade comes from tests and quizzes.
UPPER SCHOOL
Finals are 20% of the semester grade.
Students take comprehensive exams in Science, History, English and Math
A study period is provided for all students prior to each test.
The study period is optional for junior and senior students.
If any student is more than 10 minutes late or unable to take a test at the appointed time, they will need to take it during the “make up exam” on the following Saturday.
When letter grades are given, the following designations will be used:

GPA in Middle School is based on a weighted 4.3 scale (weighted by class credits). GPA in High School is also based on a weighted 4.3 scale. However, the core classes (English, History & Science) and AP Math are weighted by using a 5.0 scale.

HONOR ROLL
- Middle School students with the following GPA’s for the year will be recognized at year end.
- Upper School students with the following GPA’s for the year will be recognized at year end (based on Weighted GPA)
- Students who are receiving an incomplete (I) at the end of the quarter in any given class are not eligible to be placed on the Honor Roll.
3.33 - 3.66 Cum Laude
3.67-3.99 Magna Laude
4.0 + Summa Cum Laude
3.8-4.10 Cum Laude
4.11-4.49 Magna Laude
4.5+ Summa Cum Laude
SENIORS
Seniors with the following cumulative GPA’s will graduate with honors (based on weighted GPA’s):
3.8-4.10 Cum Laude
4.11-4.49 Magna Cum Laude
4.5+ Summa Cum Laude
Valedictorian and Salutatorian Titles: The students with the top 2 cumulative GPA’s will be awarded the honor of these titles. In order to receive these rankings, students must have attended Liberty Classical Academy for at least three of four Upper School years. Valedictorian and Salutatorian will be determined at the culmination of the third academic quarter senior year.
CLASS CREDITS
Class credits are determined by the number of days a class meets each week. Core classes are worth .5 credits per semester; elective classes .2 credits per semester.
