20 Years of Building Perseverance

Anyone who knows Susanne Horn knows that she embodies undaunted perseverance, which is one of the core values that makes a Liberty Classical education what it is. The journey she's taken has included some of the highest highs and lowest lows imaginable. She's experienced tremendous Victories and encountered devastating blows, and her perseverance and grace have served as an inspiration to many in the Liberty Community.

Before becoming the Lower School Director a few years ago, Mrs. Horn taught 5th grade at Liberty for ten years. During her tenure as a 5th-grade teacher, she initiated something she calls "Friendship Lunches" for the lower school girls. The lunches were designed to build compassion and perseverance in girls that would help guide them through what can be a pivotal and turbulent time of life.

Sometimes these lunches are with an individual student. Sometimes they're with a group. Sometimes it's because of a need she's observed. Other times a group of girls needs extra guidance. and sometimes a teacher needs extra support. They provide opportunities to grow in integrity and character. The girls learn to be better friends and to pray for each other. It's informal and it's joyful. It reinforces Liberty's values in the lives of our lower school girls while letting them see that Mrs.Horn isn't just someone they can talk to, she's there to live life with them. She is their cheerleader.

Undaunted perseverance, according to Mrs. Horn, isn't about never questioning or wondering if we have what it takes to keep going, it's more about remembering the reason we started in the first place. It's trusting the Storyteller and believing that He's got plot twists, victories, and adventures that we've never imagined. And for Mrs. Horn. it's about letting God use her to let the reality of His goodness become a part of the hearts, minds, and lives of every student with which she interacts.
