A History of Our Partnership

The senseless murder of George Floyd left the community and the city of Minneapolis wracked with grief, leaving a path of destruction and turmoil in its wake. One of those greatly affected not only by the event of COVID-19 and the stay-at-home order, is Ascension Catholic School. Located in the heart of North Minneapolis, Ascension plays an integral role within a historically high need community that as a result of these difficult circumstances has precipitously become even higher need.

Established in 1987 and steeped in the rich tradition of the Roman Catholic Church, the mission of Ascension Catholic School is to provide a future full of hope and move generations forward through education. Principal Benito Matias and Headmaster Hagstrom met at a School Choice event and immediately connected over their mutually shared vision for raising up the next generation of moral leaders through education.

We have found opportunity to come alongside the body of Christ and serve in a tangible way - to bring hope and light and sow into the next generation of leaders and culture shapers. In the past, Ascension had the ability to share school supplies among their scholars, however with the advent of COVID-19, supplies can no longer be shared and there is a need for individual school supplies for each scholar.

To this end, we are launching Backpacks for Ascension - a drive for our dear neighbors and brother and sisters in Christ. The school supply list can be found here. Please pack and pray over an individual backpack to bring to our Back to School Night on August 27th or place in the main office through August 31st. Alternatively, if you would like to bring individual items, we will happily receive them. Baskets will be set up in the main hallway for collection. Thank you for joining us as we embrace and live out our values of loving relationships and cultural engagement. Together, we will make a difference in the hearts and lives of our hurting community.
