Board of Directors
Liberty Classical Academy is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors who oversee the school’s mission, budget and school policies.
Dr. George Brushaber, President Emeritus of Bethel University and Senior Advisor to the Board
George Brushaber has an M.Div and PhD. in philosophy and theology. He retired in 2008 after more than a quarter century as president of Bethel University. Beginning in the mid-1960's he held administrative positions at Christian colleges and theological seminaries in Massachusetts, California and Minnesota. Combining journalism with administration, Dr. Brushaber was the founding editor/publisher of the Christian Scholars' Review and served as executive editor of Christianity Today magazine. Currently, he chairs the board of In Trust, an organization of 235 theological seminaries and faith-based colleges, seeking good governance, effective presidential leadership, and financially sound strategic planning.
Dr. Heather Thompson Buum, Board Member
Dr. Heather Thompson Buum is an Internal Medicine Physician at the University of Minnesota. She spends 50% of her time at the Primary Care Center seeing patients and 50% teaching medical students and residents. Heather has presented numerous workshops on teaching in medicine at the local, regional, and national level. She has won several awards for both teaching and patient care, including the Clinical Excellence Award for the Department of Medicine (2012), Top Doctors for Women in Minnesota Monthly (2011 and 2013) and the University of Minnesota Foundation's Outstanding Medical School Teacher Award (2016). Her outside interests include cooking, choral music and playing golf with her husband Paul. The Buum's have two children attending Liberty Classical Academy.
Mrs. Rebekah Hagstrom, Headmaster and Board Member
Rebekah received a B.S. in communication disorders (summa cum laude) and an M.A. in speech pathology from the University of Minnesota. She and her husband, Peter, have four children. Rebekah worked at Regions Hospital as a speech pathologist for over 10 years. She taught adult education classes at her church, served on its board, and spoke at various women's ministry events. Rebekah is the main founder of Liberty Classical Academy and is parent of two alumni.
Mr. Kim Korn, Board Member
Kim C. Korn has a B.A. in Finance and an MBA in Finance and Information Systems both from University of Iowa. He consulted for Andersen Consulting for six years. This led into a seventeen year career at Andersen Corporation. He now conducts workshops and consulting engagements world-wide. He founded Create Advantage, Inc. in 2004 in order to pursue his passion to help companies thrive indefinitely. In the process, Kim co-authored Infinite Possibility: Creating Customer Value on the Digital Frontier and is currently writing a book on Regenerative Managing – about how enterprises continually rejuvenate in pursuit of their meaningful purpose.
Dr. Robert Osburn, Board Member
Robert Osburn is the founder (2009) and Executive Director of the Wilberforce Academy, an organization whose mission is to train college students, especially international students, to be redemptive change agents in their home societies and workplaces. Previously, he was the Executive Director of The MacLaurin Institute, a Christian study center serving the University of Minnesota campus community. He holds a PhD in comparative and international development education from the University of Minnesota (2005). Robert and his wife Susan reside in Roseville, MN and their granddaughter attends Liberty Classical Academy.
Dr. Scott Sochay
Dr. Scott Sochay is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Bethel University. Scott researches and publishes in the areas of media law, media economics and media portrayals of Native Americans. He was the first Native American to receive a PhD in Mass Media from Michigan State University. Scott and his wife Michele have one son, Daniel, a senior, who will be the first graduate to have completed kindergarten through twelfth grade at Liberty.
As the main founder of Liberty Classical Academy, Rebekah Hagstrom serves as headmaster of the school. Rebekah received a Bachelor of Science degree in communication disorders (summa cum laude) and a Master of Arts degree in speech pathology from the University of Minnesota. Rebekah began her career as a speech pathologist with Regions Hospital (St. Paul, MN) and also served in several leadership roles with her home church. While raising their four children, Rebekah and her husband, Peter, experienced public education, private college prep schools, and private faith-based schools. With these school options falling short of their educational expectations, Rebekah and her husband, Peter, along with several other parents, founded Liberty Classical Academy in 2003.
